[56] I believe I read that about her,â Hyatt said, looking up for a moment, catching Edgarâs eye. âDo you know anything about her politics, Mister Leonard?â
âUnfortunately, more than I wish, but less than would be useful if it is a minute summary that you seek. That she is a Democratic town is a general axiom of the region,â Edgar said.
âAnd what, pray, is unfortunate about that?â
âTis election time come Wednesday, and the city will be turned upside down by it.â
âJust so. Just so,â said Hyatt as he licked his lips and then the edge of the tobacco paper. To Edgar, it seemed that he might have cast his answer to the void so intent was Hyatt on this task. But, after rolling a perfect cylinder, Hyatt said, âIâll lay you any bet you please that you wonât find anything less Democratic than a Democratic town. Am I not right?â
âI do not know, Mister Hyatt. I waste little time thinking upon these types of questions. No value in it. I have no faith in politics, if that is your meaning, nor in the generally held belief of human perfectibility; it is a false belief that engenders the grossest rancor of partisanship. It leadsâeven in these modern timesâto the basest tyrannies. Man is now only more activeânot more happyânor more wise, than he was six thousand years ago. The result will never varyâand to suppose that it will is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vainâthat the foregone time is but the rudiment of the futureâthat the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselvesânor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass
